About Library

The Karnatak University Library was established in 1950 along with the University. The library was housed in the main building of Government Training College for men where the University offices were also working. From October 1951, the library resources were made available to the readers. The library has opted open access right from the beginning. Now it has an independent building since 1981 located on an elevated spot surrounded by beautiful greenery. During 1994 it was named as Prof. S. S. Basavanal Library in the remembrance of Prof. Basavanal’s efforts in establishment of the Karnatak University, who was one of the founder members of the University and a great lover of books.

The building has a carpet area of around 50,000 sq.ft. It houses more than 4 lakhs books in its four huge stack rooms. It facilitates about 300 students to read at a time in the two big reading halls. The 24X7 open separate reading room facility and paragolas for open green learning space are unique features of this University library. Prof. S. S. Basavanal Library is well equipped with all the modern facilities and rich information resources in the form of books, databases, e-journals, e-books, and other printed information material related to various subjects. The Library strives to provide effective services to the users to facilitate higher learning and research.
